Background:

In 1948, water pollution really impacted some states and people’s lives so Congress created a law which would focus mainly on water pollution and they created  “The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948”.  In 1972, the act expanded and was recognized as it changed its name to  “The Clean Water Act” and the 1972 Amendments were created along with the name change. Some of the 1972 Amendments that were made are to “[give] EPA the authority to implement pollution control programs such as setting wastewater standards for industry”. EPA or the Environmental Protection Agency is an agency whose mission is to protect human and environmental health (learn more). They regulate the amount of water that industries use and inspect the process that the water is going through. Another thing is also  “[make] it unlawful for any person to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained under its provisions”,  etc (learn more about The 1972 Amendment).  There is no reason for a person to pollute the water unless given permission.  In this law, it would show the importance to ensure that water pollution is reducing.
